# The Companies and Foundations Dataset

Records contained in the **Companies and Foundations dataset**can include corporations, donor-advised funds, family foundations, and small businesses.

A Companies and Foundations record has the same options as a constituent record, with some exceptions on the Profile tab. Much like with a constituent record, a Companies and Foundations record can include custom fields.

A record is linked to a constituent through the **Jobs** area on the constituent’s Profile tab.

With the records linked, using the query tool can resolve the constituents who work for, or who have previously worked for, an organization defined in the Companies and Foundations dataset. This link can help identify matching gift opportunities.

## The dataset

The Companies and Foundations dataset includes records for non-human entities with the capacity to give, and it stores various attributes related to each company or foundation. Commonly added fields include:

- **Corporate matching**
- **Industry information**
- **Employee-specific details**

Records can be linked through the relationships tab, the jobs tab, and the giving tab.

Other fields and prompts that can be added include:

| Free Text | Prompt | Bit Prompt |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Company ID Company Name Recognition Name Salutation Match Percentage Match Employee Annual Limit Match Minimum Gift Match Maximum Gift Match Notes SIS PIDM Current Employees Former Employees | Industry Staff Assigned Constituent Type Cultivation Phase Communications Exclusions Match Distribution Frequency Match Alumni Status Match Employee Status Match Purpose | Different Company Match |

## Records

As with Person records, dataset records can be imported in bulk. Likewise, unique identifying fields from legacy systems can be imported into custom dataset-scoped fields.

When importing the data, Slate attempts to prevent the creation of duplicate records by finding an existing match. The matching criteria, including the order of evaluation, are described in the [Matching Criteria for Dataset Records](https://knowledge.technolutions.net/docs/matching-criteria-for-dataset-records) Knowledge Base article.

When adding records to a dataset, use a unique Key each record. This unique value is comparable to a person's Slate Reference ID.

Core data elements for the import of dataset records include: Name, Key, Unique for Merging Custom Field (Colleague ID, Advance ID, Jenzabar ID, and so on).

## Linking to a Constituent

A Companies and Foundations record can be linked to a constituent through the Job section of the Profile tab on a constituent record. Then, it is possible to use the query tool to determine the constituents who work for, or who have worked for, a Company/Foundation record.

## Company & Foundation Gifts with Soft Credit to a Person

When a gift comes in from a company or foundation, such as a donor advised fund (DAF), the gift itself is recorded on that organization’s record since that is the legal donor. At the same time, you can assign soft credit to an individual — in this case, the person who recommended or directed the gift.
