# Creating a Test Application

> [!NOTE]
> 📚 Part of the series **Application Building Phase II:**[**The Slate-hosted Application**](/v1/docs/introduction-to-the-slate-hosted-application)

As a best practice, we recommend creating a dedicated test person record and submitting an application for that record in Slate. Using a test record allows you to test updates without impacting live applicant data. This ensures you can safely and consistently test your Slate application while setting up pages, configuring conditional logic, creating submission requirements, and building status portals.

Creating an [application administratively](https://knowledge.technolutions.net/docs/create-application-settings) is efficient for testing maintenance updates or configuration changes; however, keep in mind that administrators can see inactive rounds and periods and may bypass submission requirements unless you view the application in an incognito window following these [steps](https://knowledge.technolutions.net/docs/application-testing-best-practices#create-a-test-application-record).

If you are troubleshooting application items or want to understand the user experience better, be sure to follow the incognito [steps](https://knowledge.technolutions.net/docs/application-testing-best-practices#create-a-test-application-record) or create a direct account/application through the account page as an applicant would.

## Administratively created applications

1. Select **Lookup** on the top navigation bar.
2. Select your test record
3. Select the **Profile** tab
4. Select **Create Application**
5. Select a **Round**
6. Leave **Application Submitted** unchecked
7. Select **Create**

This administrative pop-up will display all active and inactive Rounds since the record is being created administratively.
