Overview
The Honored By subtab on the Giving tab displays giving activity made in honor or memory of the current record.
This subtab does not show gifts the person or organization gave. Instead, it shows gifts, pledges, or planned gifts where the current record was selected as the honoree.
For example, if Alexander Hamilton makes a gift in memory of Philip Hamilton, the gift is entered on Alexander's record as the donor. If Philip is linked as the honoree, the gift appears on Philip's Honored By subtab.
What appears on the Honored By subtab
A giving record appears on the Honored By subtab when the current person or organization is linked as an honoree in the giving record’s tribute information.
The subtab will include:
- Gifts made in honor of the current record.
- Gifts made in memory of the current record.
- Pledges or planned gifts that include tribute information linked to the current record.
If no tribute-linked giving has been recorded, the subtab displays a message indicating that no contributions have been made in honor of the record.
How giving is linked to an honoree
Tributes are added from the giving record itself. They are not created directly from the Honored By subtab.
To link a gift, pledge, or planned gift to an honoree:
- Open the gift, pledge, or planned gift.
- Find the Tributes section.
- Add a tribute.
- Select the tribute occasion.
- Search for and select the honoree record, or enter a free-text honoree name.
- Save the gift.
After the record is saved, the giving activity appears on the Honored By subtab for any linked honoree records.
Tribute occasions
Tribute occasions describe why the gift is recognizing the honoree. By default, Slate includes the common occasions In Honor Of and In Memory Of.
Institutions can add additional tribute occasions using the Prompts tool. This allows schools to define occasion values that align with their stewardship, recognition, or reporting practices.
A single giving record can include multiple tributes, and those tributes can use different occasions. For example, one gift could be made in honor of one person and in memory of another person.
Linked records and free-text honorees
The Honored By subtab depends on the tribute being connected to a Slate record.
| Tribute Entry | Result |
|---|---|
| Honoree selected as a Slate record | The giving record appears on the selected record’s Honored By subtab. |
| Honoree entered as free text only | The honoree name is stored on the giving record, but the gift does not appear on a person’s or organization’s Honored By subtab. |
If the institution wants giving activity to appear on a specific record’s Honored By subtab, the honoree should be selected from Slate rather than typed only as free text. This may require making a record for the honoree prior to adding them as a tribute.
Free-text honoree names are useful when the honoree does not have a Slate record or when the institution wants to preserve a name exactly as provided by the donor.
Viewing tribute gifts
Selecting a row on the Honored By subtab opens the giving record details.
Because the current record is the honoree, the detail view will display information from the contributing record. This helps clarify who made the gift and who was honored or memorialized.
Customizing the subtab
The columns displayed on the Honored By subtab can be customized by selecting Customize View at the bottom of the list.
The default display values include:
- Gift Date
- Gift Type
- Gift Amount
- Gift Fund
- Tributes
- Gift Status
- Gift Payment Status
- Contributing Record
Customizing the view can help donor relations, stewardship, and advancement services teams quickly review tribute-related giving activity.
Reviewing tribute activity
The Honored By subtab provides a record-level view of giving activity made in honor or memory of the current person or organization. Use this view to support stewardship, recognition, donor relations, and follow-up with contributing donors.
For broader tribute reporting across records, use Slate’s query and reporting tools.
Troubleshooting
A tribute gift does not appear on the Honored By subtab
If a gift, pledge, or planned gift does not appear on the expected record’s Honored By subtab, confirm the following:
- The giving record includes a tribute.
- The honoree was selected as a Slate record.
- The correct person or organization was selected as the honoree.
- The giving record was saved after the tribute was added.
- The user viewing the record has permission to view giving information.
If the honoree was entered only as free text, the giving record will not appear on a specific record’s Honored By subtab.
The honoree name is correct, but the gift is not linked to the record
If the honoree name was typed manually, Slate stores the name as text but does not associate it with a record. Edit the giving record and select the honoree record in the Tributes section if the gift should appear on that record’s Honored By subtab.
The current record appears to have a gift they did not make
The Honored By subtab shows gifts made in honor or memory of the current record. To review gifts made by the current person or organization, use the other Giving subtabs as appropriate.
Summary
The Honored By subtab provides a tribute-centered view of giving activity. It helps institutions see when a person or organization has been recognized through gifts, pledges, or planned gifts made by others.
To ensure giving appears correctly, link tribute honorees to Slate records whenever the activity should display on a specific record’s Honored By subtab. Use tribute occasions to describe the nature of the recognition, and customize those occasions through Prompts when the default values do not meet institutional needs.
