Tribute Giving

Prev Next

Tribute giving allows a donor to make a gift in recognition of another individual or occasion. Common examples include gifts made in honor of or in memory of someone.

In Slate, tribute information is recorded directly on the gift record using the Occasion prompt (gift_occasion), which determines the type of tribute (for example, In Honor Of or In Memory Of). When entering a gift, the user selects the appropriate occasion and identifies the individual being honored.

The honoree may be:

  • an existing record in the database, or

  • a name entered manually if the honoree does not have a record.

If the tribute is linked to an existing record, the gift will appear in the Honored By section of the Giving tab on that person's record.

Tribute information can be used for reporting, stewardship, and notification processes related to tribute gifts.

Entering Tribute Information on a Gift

Tribute details are entered during gift entry.

Typical steps include:

  1. Create or open the gift record.

  2. Locate the Tributes section.

  3. Select the appropriate Occasion.

  4. Identify the Honoree by either:

    • searching for an existing record, or

    • entering a name manually if no record exists.

  5. Click Add Tribute if you wish to add multiple tributes to the gift.

Adding or Managing Tribute Occasion Prompts

Additional tribute occasions can be added by modifying the standard giving prompt with the key: gift_occasion

To add or modify tribute occasions:

  1. Go to Database > Prompts.

  2. Locate the prompt with key gift_occasion.

  3. Add or edit prompt values to represent the occasions your institution wishes to support.

Once added, these occasions will become available when entering tribute information on gifts.

Viewing Tributes on the Honoree’s Record

When a tribute is linked to an existing record, the gift will appear in the Honored By section of the Giving tab on the honoree’s record.

This section displays gifts made in connection with that individual regardless of the occasion type.
