# Managing Junk Mail in Inbox

Messages in [Inbox](/v1/docs/inbox-overview) can be marked as *Junk*and automatically routed to the Junk folder upon receipt through **spam filtering**or by configuring a **Message Inbox rule.**

## Spam filtering

Messages that come into Inbox that meet a number of common spam indicators are generally routed directly to the *Junk*folder in Inbox.

A combination of criteria may cause an email to be routed to Junk, such as:

- Subject lines that are written in all caps
- Content that includes a disclaimer about spam: "We're not SPAM!"
- Image-only emails
- Use of the word "free" in the subject line
- Use of odd characters or numbers in words ("2day," "gre@t!").

> [!TIP]
> ⭐ Best practice
>
> Work with your IT department to filter spam before it arrives to your email account and is forwarded into Slate. This significantly reduces the amount of junk mail that comes into Inbox.

## Managing junk mail

Messages that do not have a spam score above 5 may end up in your Inbox without being automatically routed to the Junk folder. Individual messages may be marked as Junk through batch management or rules.

To batch manage junk messages:

1. Select **Inbox** in the Slate navigation bar. The **Inbox** page appears.
2. Use `Ctrl` or `⌘` + `Select` to select messages.
3. Select the Batch Management icon ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/cd8ea7a6-07f3-4846-a554-627ac016d3e3/Images/Documentation/Gear_Icon.png) .
4. Select **Apply Actions.**
5. Set the **Action** to **Flag as Junk**.
6. Select **Submit**.

## Creating a Message Inbox rule

You can automate the flagging of messages as junk with a [rule](/v1/docs/getting-started-with-the-rules).

1. Go to **Database**→ **Rules**.
2. Select **New Rule**.
3. Configure the following settings:
  - **Name**: Enter a name for the rule
  - **Type**: Configurable Joins
  - **Category**: Related
  - **Base**: Inbox
  - **Rule Type**: Junk
  - **Rule Trigger**: Select either *Upon Message Receipt*or *Nightly Processing.*
  - **Folder**: Choose an existing folder or select *Other*to create a new one.
  - **Exclusivity Group**: Leave blank, select an [exclusivity group](/v1/docs/exclusivity-groups), or select *Other*to create a new one.
  - **Status**: Select *Preview.* The rule must be saved before it can be activated. Do not activate this rule until you are ready to make the rule live.
