# Managing Record Access in the Reader Using Population Permissions

You can assign users **population-based Reader permissions.**This lets you manage which records a user can access in the Reader.

For example, population permissions can display Astronomy application records in the Reader only to Astronomy department faculty.

## **Assign population-based permissions**

To grant a user access to records enrolled in a population in the Reader, assign the user the population via [Population Permissions](/v1/docs/managing-record-access-using-population-permissions).

Upon navigating to the Reader, the user will only see records that are enrolled in the granted population in the Reader bins.

1. Click **Database** on the Slate navigation bar.
2. In the **Users & Access** section, click **User Permissions**.
3. From the **Active Users** summary page click the desired user account in the list.
4. Click **Edit User**. The user’s account settings appear in a popup.
5. Click the **Populations** tab.
6. Click **Insert Population**. An **Edit Population** popup appears.
7. Select the appropriate population from the **Population** list.
8. Select the **Reader** checkbox in the **Permissions** section.

#### What if a user needs access to more than one population?

Just repeat the assignment steps. Click Insert Population as many times as necessary and give a user Reader access for each and every population configured.

#### Can I assign a role with a population permission?

Yes. When granting a user a population permission with a role, grant the role on the Populations tab - DO NOT grant the role on the Roles tab. The user will inherit all permissions granted by the role, but will inherit the population-capable permissions ONLY for the selected population.
