Select Start from the main navigation to view:

  • your school

  • your expected college entry term

  • your current school counselors

  • any independent counselors you may have

Updating information

If your school information is incorrect, change it in the Your Profile section.

You will not be able to change your school counselor information on the left hand side. If you need to invite any other independent counselors, select Invite a Counselor and enter their first name, last name, email, and phone number.

To remove one of your independent counselors, select them from the list and select and Revoke Access.

Searching for colleges

To search for colleges, click on Discover Colleges in the top navigation bar. You can type a specific’s school name in the search bar, or you can search more generally by using filters on the right hand side. You can search for a school using the following parameters:

  • Proximity to a zip code

  • Type of college

  • Size

  • Locale (i.e. City vs. Rural)

  • Attributes (HBCUs or Tribal Colleges and Universities)

Select a school to see more information about it. On a shcool’s profile, you can see the type of school, the size, and general information about their programs and enrollment. This page will also provide a link to the school’s homepage.

Scroll down to see Related Colleges and Similar Applicants. This comes from data from thousands of college applicants and applications.

  • Related Colleges are colleges similar to the one you’re looking at

  • Similar Applicants shows you where others looking at this school have applied

Adding schools to your list

If you find a school you’re interested in, select Add to College List.

A prompt asks if you want to add this school to your list: select OK. The school is added to your list.

To remove it, select Remove from College List.

You can go back to Discover Colleges and add as many colleges as you want to your list.

Understanding your List

Now that you’ve added schools to your list, see what else Start.edu can tell you:

When you click on Your List, you can see all the colleges/universities that you previously added. If you change your mind and want to remove one, just click on the yellow star.

Your school counselor is able to view the schools you’ve added to your list, and they can also offer you recommendations which appear here:

The list on the right hand side gives you recommendations based on the schools you’ve favorited. As you add more and more colleges to Your List, this list will dynamically generate other colleges for you to explore.

This is one of the great features of Start.edu: it’s not only a search engine, but also a powerful recommendation tool that lets you discover schools you may not have thought of before. Similarly, if you remove schools from your list, the list on the right-hand side will also update.

Your Profile

The information you provide here will be shared with colleges that you choose to follow and with no other organizations. You can unfollow colleges at any time.
