Opportunities in Slate represent the plan for a major gift ask and serve as the central record for tracking plans, progress, and expected outcomes.
In advancement, these are sometimes referred to as proposals, but in Slate the primary record used to capture and manage this information is the Opportunity.
To create a new opportunity:
Entering an Opportunity
Navigate to the record.
Select the Giving tab.
Select Opportunities.
Select New Opportunity.
💡 You can also create a new opportunity with a form.
Opportunity Fields
Name
Descriptive name for the opportunity.
Date
Select the identification for date the opportunity.
Status
Select the appropriate status for the opportunity. This list can be edited via the Gift Opportunity Status (gift_project_status) prompt.
User
Select the user who is associated with the opportunity. Depending on your institutional processes, this may be the user who is creating the opportunity, or the gift officer who is making the ask.
Opportunity Type
Select the appropriate type for the opportunity. This list can be edited via the Gift Opportunity Type (sys:gift_project_type) prompt.
Funding Type
Select the appropriate funding type for the opportunity. This list can be edited via the Gift Opportunity Funding Type (sys:gift_project_funding_type prompt.
Fund
If desired, you can connect this opportunity to a Fund dataset record. Once you start entering a fund name, an autosuggest provides existing funds that match your input.
Campaign
If desired, you can relate this opportunity to a campaign dataset record. Once you start entering a campaign name, an autosuggest provides existing campaigns that match your input.
Anticipated Ask Amount
If desired, you can enter the anticipated ask amount here.
Probability
If desired, you can insert the probability (in percent) for the opportunity.
Ask Date
Once an ask is made, enter the date of the ask.
Asked
Enter the amount of the ask.
Expected
This field is automatically generated when a pledge is associated with an opportunity
Received
This field is automatically generated when a gift is associated with an opportunity.
Description
If it’s helpful to your operations, you can provide a detailed description of the opportunity here.
External ID
Use this field to add a unique ID that will be assigned to a particular opportunity. This is typically used to export to other systems, or to connect associated pledges and gifts during implementation.

Associating Materials and Notes
Materials and Notes can be added to an Opportunity after it’s saved.
Add a material:
Open a constituent record and select the Materials tab. A listing of existing materials (if any) appears.
Click New Material. A Material popup appears.
Select the associated opportunity from the Record list.
Select the appropriate material type from the Material list.
Add any additional information that might be helpful in the Memo field.
Select the Source for the material. If choosing PDF / Document or File (no conversion), select the file to upload by clicking Choose File, following the prompts, and clicking Upload. If choosing Scanner, select the Scanner Preset value and click Scan to save the material.

Add a Note:
Each opportunity can have multiple notes associated with it. After an Opportunity is saved, open it an select New Note.
Custom Opportunity Fields and Opportunity Notes fields can be created to track additional detailed information.
