📚 Part of the series Application Building Phase II: The Slate-hosted Application

Slate provides a pre-built reference module that enables students to request recommendations from their references, streamlining the collection and storage of this information. The module is customizable, so it’s helpful to be familiar with the different parts of the module, including what they do and where to find them in Slate. This article provides an overview of the key components.

1. Reference/Recommendation Page

Applicants access this page within the application to add their references. Prior to your institution customizing this page, it will appear with the identifier “ref” in the Application Editor, located on the left side under the Part ID section. Also prior to customization, this page contains the embedded widget.

2. Reference Widget

This is the pop-out widget where the student provides specific reference information after selecting “Add Recommender” on the Reference/Recommendation page within the application. Prior to customization, this widget is included as part of the ‘ref’ component mentioned above.

3. Recommendation Form

This form is completed by recommenders on behalf of the applicant. It is a default form and cannot be modified unless a new form is first created within the scope of the Reference Page.

4. System Email (/apply/refer)

This is a system-generated email sent to recommenders when an applicant selects “Send to Recommender” within the reference widget of the application. *By default, the email contains general instructions and information, along with a non-customizable link to the recommendation form mentioned above.

These 4 items make up the key components of the reference module. Each can be customized to fit your process needs. For more information on how to customize these items, review and follow the instructions in the following articles:
