# Solicitation Controls & Communication Preferences for Advancement

You can manage donor solicitation controls and communication preferences with **custom fields**or with **message groups**.

## Creating and filtering on custom solicitation fields

You can [create a person-scoped custom field](/v1/docs/fields-that-store-multiple-values-from-a-prompt-list) and an accompanying [prompt list](/v1/docs/prompts) to represent your constituents’ solicitation preferences. You can associate this field value with a record by collecting it on a [form](/v1/docs/forms-overview). Then, when you create a query or recipient list, you can filter for the existence of these solicitation preferences to filter individuals who should not be solicited in a particular method.

## Creating message groups

For emails, you can create [message groups](/v1/docs/opt-out-of-specific-communications-with-message-groups) to let donors specify the communication campaigns from which they’d like to opt out. Donors can also opt-out from all marketing communication from an institution.

> [!NOTE]
> 💡 Transactional messages, like confirmation emails, are delivered regardless of a constituent’s opt-out status.
