Article summary

Specific outreach efforts in the solicitation of a gift can be captured as Appeals. Slate for Advancement databases are provisioned with an Appeals dataset.

As with the person record and other datasets, appeals have their own custom fields and tabs for tracking appeal data.

Creating an appeal

To create a new appeal:

  1. Go to Records.

  2. From the right, select the Appeals dataset.

  3. Select New Record.

  4. Configure the following settings:

    • Name: Enter a name for the appeal.

    • Key: Enter a computer-friendly name for the appeal (lowercase, underscores only)

  5. Select Save.

Linking appeals to gifts

When you select a gift (or create a new one), you can enter an appeal in the Appeals field.

Any record for whom the gift has been made can now be linked to that appeal in the dataset. Information about the appeal can be included in any queries, reports, or reconciliations of which the gift is a part.

💡 Tip

Use query string parameters to pre-fill a giving form with an hidden appeal, allowing you to directly track the correlation between your outreach effort and the resulting gifts.

Migrating to the appeals dataset

Older Slate for Advancement databases managed appeals as a special configuration of the Gift Appeal prompt list.

⭐ Best practice

If your database still has a Gift Appeals prompt list, migrate to storing appeals in a dataset.
