Article summary

Important!

It is best practice to embed reports as widgets using the report builder. This allows you to take advantage of the reporting capabilities afforded by configurable joins.

Widgets are snapshots of Slate data that can be displayed on the Slate Homepage or the Reader. Widgets are designed to provide a quick overview that does not necessarily have to be built out into a full-blown query or report.

A strong understanding of the Query Builder is recommended, as widgets are simply a visual representation of query exports and filters.

Create a New Widget

  1. Click Queries / Reports in the top navigation bar.

  2. Click New Widget

  3. Give your widget a name and click Save

    1. Select Queries / Reports on the top navigation bar.

    2. Select Widgets on the right navigation.

    3. Select New Widget.

    4. Give the widget a name.

    5. Click Save.

Tip

Naming a widget Homepage or Reader will make the widget charts appear immediately on the Slate Homepage or Reader. For Homepage widgets, create multiple tabs of widgets using the following nomenclature: Homepage - Tab Name.

By default, widgets are shown to all users, but they can be shared with specific users, roles, or permissions as needed.

Configure a New Widget

Widgets are comprised of one or more charts. Each chart aggregates data based on a particular query base. It is not only acceptable, but often desired, to have multiple charts in a single widget each reflecting data from a different query base.

Add a New Chart

  1. From the Add Chart drop-down menu, select the appropriate query population. It is also possible to add a static HTML area by selecting 'Custom SQL / HTML.'

  2. In the Edit Chart window, provide a Title for your chart.

  3. Select the desired chart type. The different chart type options are:

    • Data Table

    • Pie Chart

    • Bar Graph

    • Horizontal Bar Graph

    • Line Graph

  4. Additional options to configure the chart will display depending on the chart type (see the following section for detailed instructions for each option). Complete these options to display the desired data.

  5. Add any filters to identify the specific population on which you want to report.

  6. Click Save.

  7. Add additional charts as desired, repeating steps 1-6.

Set Sharing Permissions for Widgets

  1. Click Share, then click Add Grantee.

  2. Set to Active.

  3. For Type, select whether the widget should be shared to a specific User, or based on Permission, or on Role

  4. Enter the user, or select the role or permission to be granted access to the widget.

  5. Check 'Display Widgets' to give view access to the widget. Select 'Edit Widgets' to grant view plus edit access to the widget. Click Save.
